Waipahu Intermediate School Cafeteria
Less than
10% of the State’s public schools have air conditioning, but air conditioning
is not a perfect solution, with high initial and operating costs and its impact
on the environment. By utilizing the natural energy systems (solar energy,
sunlight, and breezes) at the Waipahu Intermediate School Cafeteria site,
Lincolne Scott developed a design response that integrates mechanical and
electrical systems within the project building architecture. The building was
designed to reduce heat gain and increase thermal comfort by natural
ventilation. Further, the daylighting was designed for even lighting levels
without glare, reducing the need for artificial lights. The cafeteria project is
the first for the State of Hawaii
to incorporate sustainable design elements and achieve
a LEED certification from the US Green Building Council.
